I've never tried pin curls but today I thought I'd give it a whirl. They seemed easy enough: take some hair, wrap it around your finger, pin to your head without twisting it...easy, right? WRONG!
Pin curls are taking over my head! I didn't expect them to work as well as they did. I made sure that my hair was wet so the curl would work and I put in small curls because my hair doesn't tend to work well with big chunky curls. I slept in them (quite comfy) and took them out around noon today. Wow- I look like a clown! So, lessons learned: do it on dry hair, maybe, use bigger chunks of hair on top, don't do the curls too high on my head, do bigger curls!
Once I experiment more and get the hang of doing it the right way, I'll post a tutorial so you don't end up looking like me!
I don't know, though- maybe it's so wrong that it's right?
Updated: after much practice, I have several pin curl tutorials on my tutorials page
the most popular and thorough is Pin Curls 101
you still look darling very 1920s,my hair tends to go a bit batty with curls too, never holds them well or holds them TOO well and ends up it a crazy mop that I have to summon up a lot of moxie to rock.
ReplyDeletePin curls are all about the brush out. The first few times I did them I almost cried because I couldn't figure out what i was doing wrong! Now I know that the right brush and extra time will tame those curls into submission. Don't be afraid to brush through thinking you'll lose the curl, because you won't.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a little pomade can help with the frizzies.
Thanks! That's really helpful! I'm always afraid to brish out in fear that I'll lose the curl or that I'll look like Gene Wilder! But, I'll take your advice and give it a try!
ReplyDeletebrish? I mean brush! *lol*
ReplyDeleteI think you look great!!
ReplyDeleteYou look very sassy!!! very 20's.
ReplyDeleteOh!! I think you look great!! I don't think they went wrong! Perhaps you need to brush them and then with your fingers and some mmmm, (I donno the english word) with some product for your hair to make it not frizz.
ReplyDeleteI have done them also and I did with wet hair, big pieces of hair and I was thinking I should have done them as you did! I guess all we need is to practice!
By the way, this is my first time in your blog, very nice blog!
aww, Laura, you're such a doll! I'm blushing! :)
ReplyDeleteIt also helps to use a cushion or a paddle brush (not a bristle brush) like this one- http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YLbwwREKL._AA260_.jpg

I think you are lucky to have hair that takes such a fabulous curl! And I second everyone else's comments about brushing through with a paddle brush, either with some pomade or serum to take out the frizz. It is simply a matter of telling the curls what you want them to do and not letting them beat you! xx
ReplyDeleteI think your hair looks amazing here! I love it... very 20s-30s Hollywood!
ReplyDeleteThis version is my favorite! The high curls framing your face make you look like a lovely sweetheart valentine.
