I was planning on posting pics of this dress ages ago but you know how it is.
Today, I finally put it on and Pj was kind enough to snap a few pics so you all could see. I used a modern pattern (McCalls 4769) view D and changed it a bit (you'll notice I left off the collar). At first, I felt like a big, scary polka dot monster but now, I kinda like it. The fabric was just some simple quilters cotton from JoAnne fabrics and I used brown vintage buttons.
Don't you love this sewing machine? Pj picked it up for me last year from a gal at his work who was getting rid of it. Like my grandma, I tend to collect lonely, homeless sewing machines.
Love those polka dots! You look gorgeous :)

I thank my grandma and great grandma for passing on their knowledge of the needle arts! When I was a kid, my mom sewed all of our halloween costumes and I always wanted to be able to do that for my kids someday so I started to learn to sew when I was about 13. I have to admit, I've had -plenty- of sewing disasters in my day. Even after 12 years of sewing, I still have moments where I want to throw my machine out the window! I just learned last year that following the instructions on the pattern makes for a much better finished project! Practice makes perfect so I guess by the time I'm my grandma's age, I'll be a pro! Thanks, ladies!
ReplyDeleteLove the new dress - hope my efforts turn out half so well! And I just inherited a sewing machine remarkably similar to yours. I can't resist taking in strays either. :)

Second, I have that exact machine! I picked it up at a thrift store, but haven't had a chance to use it yet.
