This week's star studded vintage fashion film is The Aviator starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale and John C Reilly. What a gorgeous and intriguing movie. In 2004, I saw the Aviator in theaters. I wasn't thrilled to see it in the first place because I really didn't know anything about the story beforehand but wow, am I glad I did!
It's the story of the early life of eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes and how his obsession with aviation and film made him a legend. In his battle with obsessive compulsive disorder, Howard Hughes spent millions of his own money to produce his films Hell's Angels, The Outlaw and Scarface. He also bought TWA airlines and set several world records for airspeed with the planes that he built. Howard Hughes was one of the most important Aviators in history.
Howard had many romances with some of the most glamorous ladies of the day including Katherine Hepburn, Ava Gardener and Faith Domergue, making The Aviator a fashion feast for admirers of 20's-40's looks. Oh as a side note, the soundtrack for The Aviator is awesome!
So, I don't know, what do all of you think about Gwen Stefani as Jean Harlow? Love it or hate it?
Costumes for the Aviator were designed by Sandy Powell. You may have seen Ms. Powell's amazing costume works in films Interview with the Vampire, Gangs of New York, The Other Boleyn Girl and Shutter Island. Look for more glorious historical costumes by Sandy Powell in the upcoming movies The Tempest, The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Sinatra.
Yeah, this movie's costumes are out of this world...but then everything Sandy Powell has done is like that!
ReplyDeleteI remember not thinking much about this movie, but I bought it for $5 and I really liked it. The costumes were amazing.
ReplyDeleteI loved the costumes, but I felt so sad for Howard Hughes when watching it... especially in a time when there wasn't much support in society for people with a mental illness, they just hid him away and didn't let him get the help he clearly needed :(
ReplyDeleteI remember when it came out and I did not know who Howard Hughes was. boy do I feel dumb now. I personally would like to see it, having learned so much more about that era since 2004. Also, I love Gwen Stefani, despite whatever cray-cray she's been the past few years, and since I have been living vicariously through her white blonde hair I think it is only appropriate she play Jean Harlow.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your extremely helpful suggestion. I would not have guessed you have fine hair. I will def. try the rag curls-- the one prob. with foam rollers is they are not comfy to sleep in and I'll bet rag curls are just fine. I also find that hot curlers, although they do leave some body in my hair, do not retain the curls more than a couple hours, and it's lame given what a pain they are to put in. I have heard that I should use a setting lotion, so maybe I will give it a second shot? I'll def. post the results of rag curls soon though. Thanks again!
Love the film but I must say that Gwen Stefani as Jean Harlow is a big no-no in my book. I'm a HUGE Jean fan so I suppose I'm extra picky but to me Jean was far more animated and goofy than how Gwen portrays her. And they look totally different to me. Leonardo and Cate are brilliant in the film, though!
ReplyDeleteI agree, the costumes in this film are to die for :) I really enjoyed this movie, but like Miss Emmi I felt so bad for Howard Hughes. The anguish he went through was so sad :(
ReplyDeleteThis was an awesome movie. I used to show it to my freshmen film classes because the decor and custumes are so spot on.
ReplyDeleteI love Leonardo in this as Hughes. I didn't think I would but he was fantastic.
I thank you on my blog!!!
ReplyDeleteI will watch Leo in anything, and he was so great in this! Also, Cate Blanchett was spot on as Katherine Hepburn. What a great movie. I need to watch it again!
ReplyDeleteGreat movie! Leo is such a great actor :)
