1930s Summer Fashions
6/26/15
Well, I was hoping to do some hair tutorials this weekend but I woke up with some sort poison ivy/oak rash all over my face! So, I hope you all enjoy some more old magazine scans for a few days!
I found a big shelf of old magazines at an antique shop near my mom's house in the country last summer. They've just been sitting around so I thought I'd share before they turn to dust someday! This is from Women's Home Companion, July 1939

On Saturday, we went to a party for Pj's cousin's graduation. It was a really beautiful and finally sunny day. The kids played in the sand and had a water balloon fight and the grown-ups enjoyed his grandma's much-loved whiskey sour punch, which she froze so it would be all slushy and wonderful.
I was sitting there, sipping my slushy punch but it was still very hot. I grabbed a hand full of ice from the cooler to hold on the back of my neck, when I got the idea to tuck the ice in my hair! I rolled my hair up that day and had the perfect spot for about 4 small ice cubes. As they melted, the water ran down, cooled me off and it was perfect! I'll probably do it like this every time I have yard work to do this summer. Try this version based on Allie's lake-side hair in The Notebook

Dutchtown Bazaar 2015
6/20/15
Last Saturday, my mother in law watched the kids and Pj and I went to vend my Wacky Tuna wares at the Dutchtown Bazaar here in St. Louis. This was my first craft show on my own, last time I shared a booth space with my friend, Erin of Yellow Bird Gifts. I didn't know if I had enough stuff to even fill a whole space but I guess I made more than I thought!
I had a whole new display for everything this time around, with some vintage wooden baskets, a vintage picnic basket and some wine crates and shelves from my grandma's stash. The snood baskets were from the barn in the country and I was so excited when they said I could bring a couple home. When not in use at the craft shows, I think I'll keep craft supplies for the little ones in them, in the kitchen.
It was a very hot day in St Louis but it was fun getting out and meeting new crafty friends and seeing some old ones too. We brought home some vintage toys for the little ones and I found some new summer wedges for myself. Pj got some pics of me hanging out on Instagram

The Bourbon Skirt
6/5/15
Last summer, while visiting my mom and grandma in Bourbon, Missouri, we went to a couple of resale shops in town. I found some great treasures including 25 cent bakelite, a fantastic pink lamp with a fiberglass lampshade and this pretty tiki print cotton fabric. The fabric had been stashed away in a box for months. I woke up the Thursday before Memorial Day and decided to make it skirt with it to wear in the country that weekend. I love the way it turned out and it's very comfortable and I whipped it up before lunch time!

For memorial day weekend, we drove to the country to visit my parents and my aunt who was in town. We haven't been to the country very much this year but May was a great time to go. We saw a deer eating breakfast in the meadow one morning, we caught a couple of box turtles to play with one afternoon and there we so many squirrels, rabbits and unique Missouri birds that we never see in the suburbs.
All of the daisies were blooming in the meadows and in the yard. Mom and grandma specifically mowed around them so we could enjoy them as long as possible. I picked a few and made a daisy crown to wear in my pin curls.
I found this floral print cotton 50s dress at a thrift store ages ago and stashed it away in my shop racks. It never did make it to etsy and since the shoulders and such have some faded spots anyway, I decided to give it a try. It's still too small in the boob area, as it was before so I got a little creative with an embroidered peasant blouse underneath! I've seen several vintage dress patterns with a little fabric inlay at the bodice front and I always thought it would be a great way to give my dresses a little extra boob room because heaven knows, I need it!
